Craft Club for September 1998

This month's craft was more for the moms than the kids... we had fun while the kids ran all over the place in Megan's cool yard! It rained off & on in the morning, but Megan's trees kept the craft area dry and the crispness felt wonderful after such a hot summer!

Craft of the Month!

Scarecrows

This craft was a bit more complicated, & the gluing took some patience, but we now have something that will last for decorating for a long time!
Materials: burlap, twine, Tacky Glue (recommend Alene's), newspaper, sticks, straw & some felt.
First you cut all the burlap pieces (we were lucky, as Megan had already done this for us!) ... the head piece is about 10" x 8", the body is approx. 4' x 2', and the hat is a long triangle about 1' x 1'.
Next you make a newspaper ball and wrap it in the head piece, tying the neck with twine. Then you take the body piece and finish the edges by folding and gluing them over about 1 inch each side (the 2 sides). Take a stick and tie straw for hands on each end (tie it tight!). Fold body piece over the hands stick, so only the straw is showing. Next, use newspaper to create the legs (use one piece and rip it up the center kind of like pants)and tie more straw to be the feet... Are you getting all this? haha :) Next, put a stick through the bottom and tie the legs around it and seperate the legs. For the hat, roll up and glue the triangle burlap piece, and then use twine near the top to give that flopped over look. Glue hat onto head, and glue head onto body. HOLD for a LONG time to let glue set! Decorate with felt as you wish - we did patches and a bandana. For hanger, tie twine to bottom stick, twist it TIGHTLY around the wrists/burlap and continue up about 1 foot above the head - hold it there (or pin onto table to hold, and turn back around to repeat the procedure back down the other side... twist around wrist/burlap and tie onto bottom stick. Decorate face with markers or paint.
Voila! You have made a cutie-pie scarecrow to hang in your home!
